Guilty Conscience

Can you go insane from just regretting something that you did?

I think you could go insane. I mean not like literally insane where you are in an insane asylum, but like in your mind you believe you are insane and you can't help but just hallucinate on things did that were wrong to you. If it was something like horrible, for instance murder, the person will never forget that, so they beat themselves up over it and their mind seems to play tricks and won't even let you forget. It will always be there, with you for life.

You can totally go insane from regret because I think that if you regretted something badly enough it would be the only thing that you think about and everything you do would remind you of what you did and in the end it would be too much for you to take so you'd just go crazy. I also think that that is part of the reason that some people have hallucinations since what they did is the only thing on their mind like MacBeth seeing Banquo's ghost.

I agree that it is quite possible for someone to go insane from their own regret. In the play Macbeth's guilt manifested itself into seeing a sword pointing to Duncan and Banquo's ghost.
